Topic: Anti-amoebic agents
An amebicide is an agent that is destructive to amoeba, especially parasitic amoeba that cause amoebiasis.
Classification of drugs:
A. Tissue Amoebiasis
1. Both intestinal & extra intestinal:
a) Nitroimidazoles: Metronidazole, Tinidazole, Secnidazole, Ornidazole
b) Alkaloids: Emetine, Hydroemetine
2. Extra intestinal amoebiasis only: Chloroquine
B. Luminal amoebiasis
1. Amide: Diloxanide furoate
2. 8-Hydroxy quinolones: Quinidochlor
3. Antibiotics: Tetracycline, Paromomycin
